Marugame castle

Marugame Castle is a historically important castle located in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. Marugame Castle is known as “the castle of stone walls” and boasts the highest stone walls in Japan. These stone walls were built with the highest level of technology in the early Edo period and are characterized by their beautiful curves.
The castle’s keep, one of 12 existing in Japan, is a three-story, three-story wooden structure. Interestingly, it is the smallest of the existing castle towers.
Marugame Castle is a flat mountain castle built on Kameyama, about 66 meters above sea level, and has a “whirlpool” structure with the Honmaru at its center and the Ninomaru and Sanomaru spiraling around it.
The castle was built by Ikoma Chikamasa and his son Kazumasa over a period of five years from Keicho 2. More than 400 years after its construction, the castle still retains its unique stylistic beauty in harmony with nature.
Free guided tours by volunteer guides are offered inside the castle, allowing visitors to learn more about the castle’s history and highlights.
