Singapore to Sapporo WITHOUT Flying: Day 87

A not so lousy Laos-sy capital…

Tash and I are in Vientiane and it’s time for some admin and some sightseeing. First we borrowed some bikes from our hostel and headed to the immigration bureau. Now this gorgeous building may seem like a tourist attraction but in fact, we were only there to extend our visas.

Next we made our way over to the COPE Visitor Centre. This is an incredible organisation that provides rehabilitation and prosthetics for all those with disabilities in Laos, whether they be victims of unexplored bombs or for any other reason. Laos has a dark history due to the US bombing campaign, so this is a great place to educate yourself on the horrors and how it still affects people today. An absolute must-do if you’re in the city.

The last stop today is one of my favourite monuments I’ve ever seen. The Arc de Triomphe looks great sure, but the story behind it is fantastic. America gifted Laos funds to build an airport. Instead of doing that, the Laotian government of the time used the funds to build the Victory Monument instead. Amazing. It stands today to represent the Laos people’s fight for independence from France.

A jam packed day full of activity in the city!
