Otaru Hokkaido | Otaru Sankaku Market | Hokkaido LeTAO Dessert | Nikka Yoichi Distillery | 1 of 2

Hello everyone! Welcome back to our Japan travels with 2 kids under 2. Our next stop in this adventure is Otaru, known glass as a result of squid fishing, music boxes and home to LeTao, a Hokkaido dessert brand.

First we went to Sankaku market to experience the local seafood, it was truly an amazing experience, well worth the price tag such as uni and sweet prawns. There were also heaps of shellfish and crustaceans, however one can only consume so much so we decided on a sit down meal and order off the menu. The market stalls itself offer a cook and dine on the spot option if you’re really that hungry and you can also haggle (not recommended).

After we lunch, we went to walk along Otaru Canal in the blistering hot sun, though it was a nice walk, it’s clearly very touristy. We then walked to LeTAO the main store where it was originated from in Otaru, the size of the place is huge for a dessert parlour. Though it was a hot summer day, we could only consume so much as we were fully stuffed from the morning’s seafood bowls.

The following day we were off to Yoichi town, which is roughly a 40min drive from Otaru and pay a visit to Nikki Distillery, personally I think this is the most unique brand of Japanese whisky in Japan. The story behind the brand was the creator was born in Japan, travel to Ireland to learn the craft of whisky making and came back home with an Irish wife to replicate the same Irish traditions in Japan. This is why he chose Otaru to replicate the similar climates of Ireland and using the same distillery techniques he made his own Japanese flavours. The flavours are definitely peaty and smokier than the mellow Japanese flavours of their local counterparts. This is a great cross between the mellow whisky wanting to branch out into the more stronger flavours that is Irish whisky. I am no whisky connoisseur you must come and experience the real deal yourself. Nikka also has a distillery near Sendai where they make their Miyagikyo label.

Finally we finish this part of our Otaru trip back in Otaru for some local drumming exhibition, which was a nice way to finish the day.

Please enjoy this leg our trip in Hokkaido!
