I conquered my fear of heights on Japan’s steepest summit

I started this hike at Kamikochi, going all the way to the Yarigatake Lodge on day one, and back on the following day. There are a lot of other trails, and most people spend a few nights in between. There’s also the option of going across Daikiretto, the steepest (and potentially most dangerous) trail in Japan. I didn’t feel ready for that just yet. Next time I may try the Daikiretto route.. there are so many great areas in this mountain range. It is crowded though, which made me appreciate the trails I usually hike up in Iwate and Akita.

I’m a full-time guide, mostly up in Tohoku (northeast Japan) but I also guide groups up Mt. Fuji in the pre and post season as well as lead normal tours in places like Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo when contracted.

  1. Well done on facing your fears! It must have felt so liberating!

It looks like at the end you were close to Tsurugi-dake, did you also perhaps climb Tateyama? Looked like great weather

  2. Those valleys are stunning. Congratulations on chipping away at the fear of heights. I’m not sure I’d be super keen on those vertical sections…
