Mount Usu is one of the most active volcanoes 🌋 in Japan. Every time it erupts, it creates new craters, like the one that eventually turned into the beautiful Lake Toya! We took the ropeway 🚡 up to see the panoramic view of both the lake and the volcano.

We raced to hike the trail 🚶‍♀️ at the top to see some of the other craters created by recent eruptions before the ropeway down closed but there are so many stairs, it’s no joke! 😫 Make sure to give yourself enough time if you want to go out to the furthest point and come back. There are also 2 observation decks at the top to admire the view 🤩

🚗 Transport: 2h drive from Sapporo to Usuzan Ropeway
🅿️ Parking: Available at the ropeway, 500 yen / car (cash only)
🚡 Ropeway: 1,800 yen / person roundtrip, one-way options also available. Runs every 15 minutes, 6 min ride each way.
⏰ Hours: 8:15 AM – 5:15 PM, but hours may vary on season
👟 Hiking: The path that goes to the furthest crater takes ~3h roundtrip including the ropeway
