JAPAN: A Land of Four Seasons and Endless Wonders on Sakura TV

Japan’s four distinct seasons bring unique beauty year-round. In winter, experience deep powder snow; in spring, the iconic cherry blossoms bloom. Summer comes alive with vibrant festivals and firework displays, and autumn offers stunning foliage as the leaves change colors, known as Koyo (紅葉).

Cherry blossom season begins in the south, where temperatures are milder, and progresses northward. In contrast, the autumn foliage starts in the cooler north like Hokkaido and moves southward.

Take Southern Kyushu, for example. This region, which includes Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima, and Okinawa Prefectures, enjoys an extended autumn foliage season from late November to mid-January. Each prefecture offers its own unique experiences together with Koyo:

Oita is Japan’s hot spring mecca, with endless relaxation options.
Miyazaki is known for its premium Miyazaki beef, tropical fruits, and hot beach bathing. Kagoshima boasts the active volcano island of Sakurajima and rich samurai history. Okinawa retains its tropical climate year-round.

Since ancient times, Japanese people have admired the changing colors of autumn as much as the cherry blossoms of spring. Why? Japan’s abundant rainfall, vast forests (covering two-thirds of the country), and diverse tree species create a spectacular display of fall colors nationwide. From north to south, deciduous trees transform, making autumn a breathtaking season in nearly every region of Japan.
