The Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome from All Angles

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome or Genbaku Dome, is a powerful symbol of the devastating effects of nuclear warfare.

The building was originally constructed in 1915 as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, designed by Czech architect Jan Letzel. It featured a distinctive European-style architecture with a prominent dome, which made it stand out among the mostly wooden structures in Hiroshima at the time.

On August 6, 1945, at 8:15 AM, the first atomic bomb used in warfare exploded approximately 160 meters southeast of the building and about 600 meters above ground. The blast’s pressure was immense, reaching 35 tons per square meter with wind speeds of 440 meters per second. Despite the incredible force, the central portion of the building miraculously remained standing, though everyone inside perished instantly.
