Japan Rail Trip – Osaka, Kyoto, Hakone, & Tokyo

2 minutes of our rail trip exploring Japan.

Osaka – finding the best okonomiyaki and takoyaki street food stalls in and around the packed streets of Dotombori. Playing the arcades and finding the weird and the wonderful in the streets of Shinsekai.

Kyoto – hitting the sites of traditional Kyoto including Fushimi Inari shrine, Yasaka pagoda and shrine, Arashiyama bamboo grove, Nishiki market, and a Geisha tour through the streets of Gion.

Nara – a half day out exploring Nara deer park and Tōdai-ji temple.

Hakone – the bullet train to Odawara and then on to a traditional ryokan for soaking in onsens, exquisite kaiseki meals, the train, cablecar, ropeway, boat and bus circular around Hakone and Lake Ashi with a brief view of Mount Fuji. A trip to the excellent Hakone Open Air Museum.

Tokyo – the big bright lights of this huge city full of things to do including the extraordinary TeamLabs – Planets, 3D billboards at Shinjuku, Go Karting through the streets of Tokyo, and evening meal overlooking Tokyo Tower, and Shibuya scramble crossing.

Itinerary

Fly into Osaka

Days 1-3 exploring Osaka
Day 4 half day in Nara
Days 4-7 Kyoto
Day 8-11 Shinkansen to Odwara and then 3 nights in Hakone
Days 11-14 4 nights in Tokyo and then flights home.
