Japan Train IC CARD Essential Update You MUST KNOW | Suica & PASMO are finally BACK | September 2024

Japan’s ‘Suica’ and ‘PASMO’ IC cards are absolute essentials for any traveler. Not only do they make getting around on public transportation incredibly easy, but you can also use them for shopping at convenience stores, supermarkets, and even vending machines. They’re truly must-have items for a smooth and efficient trip in Japan.
However, back in August 2023, due to a global semiconductor shortage, the sale of Suica and PASMO cards was suddenly halted. But here’s the inside scoop: while the official websites didn’t announce it, some stations quietly started selling limited quantities of physical Suica and Welcome Suica cards again. I’ve been keeping you updated as the situation changed, checking constantly to share where you could still get them.
But today, I’ve got fantastic news! JR East has officially announced that they’ve secured enough semiconductors to restart sales of Suica and PASMO cards. This is a huge update! But there are still some restrictions and important details you need to know. I’ll cover everything in this video.
Plus, I’ll also share significant updates about the Welcome Suica and PASMO Passport, which are incredibly popular with international travelers because they don’t require a deposit. And finally, I’ll give you my recommendation on which IC card might be the best fit for your trip based on these updates.
By the end of this video, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your time in Japan. Stick around till the end, and let’s dive in!

  3. Hi Toshi, same question. I am flying to Japan end of Nov via Osaka. So, which IC card to get in Osaka? I will be visiting Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo.

  5. Hello, I will be travelling to Japan in October will I need to buy welcome suits cards for each of my children? They are 9 and 7 years old

  6. I heard you also need passport no and japanese phone number for the registered/non-registered suica card? Is this correct?

  7. Hi, very interesting and complete video, as usual!
I need just a small explanation: what will be the procedure to get a registered Suica (also called "My Suica" if I am not wrong)?? Will it be available from vending machines as it was in past, or shall one need to purchase it asking a clerk in a JR Travel Service Center (only in major stations) or "normal" JR Ticket Office (in almost every JR station)?
