The shrine mikoshi procession
The main shrine mikoshi (miya mikoshi) of Fukagawa Shinmei Shrine was made in September 1934 by mikoshi maker Goto Naomitsu of Gyotoku, Chiba Prefecture. It is a large mikoshi with a pedestal measuring 4′ square and a beautiful lacquered stepped roof. Every three years, it is carried out on a procession through the 12 towns of parishioners. Officially called the “Shinkosai,” it is customary to hold it on a Saturday during the annual festival. Led by the woodcutter group of carpenters, the procession includes the head of the shrine parishioners in light yellow hemp hakama, sacred treasures such as the Gohokoshi and Igi Gomon, and priests on horseback, who accompany the mikoshi. Please note that water is not poured on the main shrine mikoshi.
