Who’s Bright Idea was this? | A Lighthouse on the Canal | Boat Life

This week I cruise The Rum Wench to Worsley over the Manchester Ship Canal via the Barton Swing bridge. After a day in the village of Worsley with its orange waters and also managing to fit in a brief tour of a Wide beam boat. I then continue my cruise up the Leigh Branch on the Bridgewater canal to link with the Leeds Liverpool Canal at long last! I meet some amazing fellow boaters and go from emergency rations to a feast fit for a king!

Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I’m Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK’s Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion – my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy and the perfect First Mate. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Narrowboat Pirate aboard The Pirate Boat.

  2. Hello, im the painter behind the 4 seasons boat you passed, it was painted on behalf of the owners at dewsbury marina.
Id happily share some more work if youd like to see. Many thanks for the kind words..
    Squidge

  3. That were mint that were or as they say down yer in the westcountry , twere gurt lush.😁
Thanks as always Heidi, safe onward travels and happy faffing for the week ahead.😊
Hope Sandra and Nicky are well and doing ok .😊

  4. Brilliant vlog Heidi. Thanks for letting us share your adventure. Love it that the community comes together for each other. Take care and stay safe. ATB to you and Bonnie. X

  5. Just love Thursdays’s. Great video again Heidi. Love Phil’s Lighthouse. Bonny is too cute and how well behaved she was with the other dog. The view of the canals you were on were BEAUTIFUL. Nothing like that here in Chicago USA. If you have a crock pot you can cook your dinner on low all day and it would be ready for you when you’re ready to eat. Google crock pot recipes for the kinds of foods you like and get recipes from that (just a suggestion)❤️🏴‍☠️

  6. Another banger hun,
You know how we can't wait another week,
I'm saying 3 times a week upload hahah 😂 even that won't be enough ly babe ❤❤

  7. Thanks Heidi. Brought back a lot of memories. As a kid, playing on the side of the Bridgewater Canal with my cousins. Then other times in someone's car (we didn't have a car) getting very excited while we waited for the Barton Swing Road Bridge to be swung round to allow a ship to pass along the Manchester Ship Canal – and also watching the Swing Aqueduct in action. Fast forward to around 45 years ago on a hire boat braving the locks through Manchester and turning via a huge lock onto the Bridgewater. I don't think there was a time limit in those days.

  8. Hello Heidi. You and Bons are looking great. I understand getting tired of the same recipes. Now I’m following another excellent YouTuber Albert who has Spain on a fork. Excellent easy Spanish recipes using pantry staples like chick peas, onions garlic tomato sauce, potatoes, frozen fish, canned fish like tuna, sprats, sardines, salmon and tuna. Green beans or zucchini. Sweet smoked paprika is a regular ingredient. Everything is healthy and reasonably priced. And you can use tins of the veggies or frozen if you don’t have fresh. I eat it all the time.
    Be well. Joe and Gigi.

  9. After watching you on the bridgewater canal like i said brings back happy memories that much so I've decided now I'm retired it time to buy a boat and enjoy the canals again

  10. I know I rarely comment but I watch every video. I just had to say that besides just spending time with you and Bonnie, I really love all your beautiful music that you have made and play on your videos. You are talented and so much fun to spend time with. 🙂

  11. is that registered with the amateur radio community's light houses on the air I wonder, that would be a neat contact, something to be said for tasting a tart, but i never cared for spiced rum, find a bottle of Appleton white Jamaican rum, but watch out, it would sneak up on me about 3/4 of a liter and i would find out that even though it tasted like water my legs forgot where they were, havent been able to find an supplier in over 10 years but dang 🏴‍☠

  12. You have the best narrow boat blog, just saying. Keep up all the hard work you do to make us simple people happy. Thank you

  13. Hi Heidi, and beautiful little Bonny, I must say I really appreciate you both. I love it when I see little Bonny when she’s just having so much fun and being herself is wonderful so wonderful to see and Bonny is a change little puppy used to be terrified of everything , Heidi, bit of a shame you haven’t got a girlfriend you’re a wonderful lady and someone in your life to share. Everything. Really love and appreciate you both. You don’t know how much you make me so happy when I see your videos to see you both. Lots of love from Australia.

  14. Hey Heidi! For a 'quikie' meal try this…..buy a frozen Lasagna Alfredo ready meal and add a few frozen shrimp while in the microwave…add grated white cheese and stir in to thicken….Yum…add a dash of wine if you choose!

  15. What kind of food do you like to cook, Heidi? Do you have any restrictions? There's a youtube channel I like called FoodWishes, his recipes are great, and simple too. Here's one I have used: One Pot, One Portion: Simple, speedy recipes just for you, by Eleanor Wilkinson. I love your videos! Bonnie is so lovely and so are you. Your music is fantastic. This is one of my favourite one-pot dishes: Cabbage and Sausage/Mon Petit Chou
MMmm so good! Just a few ingredients, and time. Can be made in a crock pot or on the stove. One of my favorite comfort foods for cold winter days.

    Difficulty: Easy
    Servings: 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 2-4 hrs

    Ingredients
    1 small head of cabbage
    1 – 2 pounds favorite sausage
    1/4 cup butter
    salt
    pepper
optional 1/4 cup beer OR water
5 quart crock pot OR heavy-bottomed pot (ie dutch oven) on low OR 325 degree oven
    Directions
Wash the cabbage, cut into quarters and core. Either steam/parboil it for 2 minutes, or microwave on high for two minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Set aside.
Cut up sausages and cook in pan over medium heat until no longer pink/lightly browned. Drain and set aside.
In 5 quart crock pot, or heavy-bottomed pot – if cooked on stove; oven proof pot if cooked in 325 degree oven:
    layer ingredients:
scatter pieces of butter on bottom,
    layer cabbage,
    scatter sausage on top,
    pinch of salt and
    fresh ground pepper,
    add another layer of cabbage,
    sausage, bits of butter, pepper,
repeat until all is in the pot.
don’t use too much salt! But lots
    of pepper is very tasty.
If adding beer, pour over now.
    Or add 1/4cup water.
cover and cook on HIGH in crock-pot for 2 hrs, check
at 2 hr mark, turn to low if browning.
    OR
cover and cook on low on back burner on stove
for 4 to 5 hrs (even longer if you like = just check for liquid
and add splash more if dry)
This will cook down to a lovely, aromatic, dish. Watch it doesn’t get too dry but it shouldn’t due to the water content of the cabbage.
Serve with fresh bread and butter! OH so good.
I originally got this recipe from James Barber. Cheers!

  16. Here is a quick, super easy and delicious recipe if you like salmon. It works best if you have a skillet with raised edges to put in searing marks to make it look pretty if cooking on a hob or you can do it on an actual BBQ. Take hickory or mesquite store bought BBQ sauce and mix 1 part to 3 parts bourbon or spiced rum in a small saucepan. Usually a couple of tablespoons of sauce to 6 to 7 tablespoons of your favorite spiced rum or bourbon is enough for a medium sized salmon steak. Stir well over medium heat to cook off the alcohol (trust me worth it) until it reaches a thin glaze consistency. Let it cool slightly and it will thicken. Take a fillet of salmon (best if skin is removed) and grill it for 2.5 to 3 minutes on medium high heat, rotate almost 90 degrees with a spatula to get a nice diamond shape cross hatch sear mark for 2 minutes more and flip to the other side. Baste on the Rum or bourbon glaze you made on top and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes and that’s it! 3 ingredients and about 20 minutes total time including the glaze which gives it a pretty reddish translucent coating. It’s delicious, healthy and rumtastic. 👍
Add your favorite sautéed vegetables on the side (I’m partial to peppers and onions but any will do) and a starch like boiled buttered potatoes, baked potatoes or rice, some crusty bread like a baguette and you’ve got a feast fit for a pirate queen! It’s easy and fool proof. If you don’t have a grill pan any pan will do. You can even sauté the veggies first in a little olive oil, empty, then use the same pan without cleaning to do the salmon next. Less dishes to wash. If you try it please let me know how it came out. My kids use to not like salmon, (they are picky eaters) but they love this recipe because it tastes sweet and not fishy at all. I absolutely adore your channel!❤️ Cheers from Florida 🌴🌴🌴⛵️.

PS We live in Palm Beach County just south of the treasure coast where Mel Fisher found in 1985 over $450 million in gold, silver and jewels from shipwrecked galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank in a 1622 hurricane. 🏝️

  17. Glad to see your security conscious poor may moon had her boat badly vandalised while she was away for a couple of days , the poor girl was badly traumatised by the vandalism and violation of her home not to mention the significant expense getting repairs done.

  18. Cut chicken breasts into 1" slices bake at 350 for 14 minutes. On totillas with melted cheese onions mushrooms. Great in salads also dipping into different bbq sauces.

  19. 'Er boot 'tis long an' 'tis narrer,
It chug along nay fast a walkin',
So nowt like t' speed of an arrer,
    More snail-pace-like, I'm a talkin'.

The maiden, a pirate she dresses,
An' drinkin' all manner o' rum,
She wench, but ain't 'ave n' dresses,
Yet be buteful an' so full o' fun,

But, she canno' be seen a Monday,
On Tuesdays she be not about,
Sadly not seen on a Wednesday,
An' Fridays an' weekends are out,

Thursday's our day to be sailin',
    Enjoying adventures of 'cut,
We's up North, winds be galein',
With Heidi and Bonny 'er mutt.

So lift up yer glass to our hero,
Toast to 'er nay springin' a leak,
Vlog ends but nay shed a tearo,
We'll be with 'er ag'in' in a week.

  20. What a great Sunday roast on Tuesday😆 It’s lovely to be see you back among the boating people, they are so lovely and generous. I enjoyed the towns and houses but I agree living in the lighthouse would be a blast. You need to put the ditties in a book and sell them, with the writers permission, I’d buy one. Linda

  21. If you have a freezeryou can make a few lasagne or curries and freeze them. 45 minutes in the oven. I do this a lot so always have meals in. When I do an omelet I do it in a pan but instead of flipping it to cook the other side just put it under the grill.

  22. It’s late, I’ve watched to many vlogs, yours being my favorite and I’ve gotten a bit punchy. When that happens I get a bit silly so here are a few limericks that sprang to mind.

“There once was a tug named The Rum Wench.”
“Captained by Heidi, who liked to cause a stench.”
    “She sells her pirate wares.”
    “And ignores all the stares.”
“Downs a tit of Rum and takes you in the rear entrance.”

    “Don’t be rude!”😝

“There once was Bonny and a Pirate lass.”
    “Whose narrowboat none could surpass.”
“Heidi had rescued her first mate.”
“Saved her from an awful fate.”
“And together they have a lot of sass.”

    “Heidi was a pirate lass.”
“Ate to much Curry that gave her gas.”
“In mixed company she was in much pain.”
“Not to be embarrassed she fought against the strain.”
“And like Gandolf she said “You Shall Not pass!”

Sorry for the last one. You use the crow of a cock in the morning followed by a fart noise which I’m embarrassed to admit makes me chuckle every time. Like I said I’m sleep deprived so forgive me for the last one but it made me laugh the most. I love ya Heidi, don’t you dare change, you’re perfect the way you are. I’m a fan. James Misura. Cheers from Florida 🌴🌴🌴❤️👍

  24. Hello Heidi and Bonny — I totally love the graphics showing your progress on the waterways. Your videos are always good but the quality every week seems to out do the last. I have found that omelettes need a little lower heat on the skillet and when you oil the skillet use a spoon back or something to spread the oil evenly on the skillet or you end up with an egg massacre. Love to you and Bonnie drone Gramma Lainee — save a spot for me next Thursday.
