Located at the very northern tip of Japan’s largest island of Honshu, the Shimokita Peninsula is one of the country’s most remote areas – home to spectacular ocean views, curious rock formations and Osorezan – or Fear Mountain – a sacred mountain set within an otherworldly volcanic landscape said to be the gateway to the afterlife.

  1. Great video! Thank you for this! I hope you continue to cover the less explored, off-the-beaten-path destinations in Japan!

  2. Love it. I went there back in 2015 thanks to the guidance of your website! Even back then it was so easy to navigate to Osorezan by public transport. I was there in May just before the Golden week so it was pretty busy place. The train ride was so rewarding as the fields were golden with canola flowers. Also the monks were so welcoming and spoke perfect English! Highly recomend but only for adults. Don't bring any children there. It's very sacred place. I'm planning to stay overnight there again in near future for sure.

  3. How far apart is Sai from Hotokegaura? If one takes the sightseeing cruise having parked at Sai, is it possible to walk back to it?

  4. Finally after 3 weeks! Great content as always guys. My wishlist: Hakata/Fukuoka area 🙏

  5. A new page on the website, dedicated to Hotokegaura, would be really appreciated! Especially with directions and links to sightseeing boat tours!

  6. You can stay the night at Osorezan at the temple. Amazing experience. I hope I get the chance to go back again. One of my most favourite places in Japan.
