My friend took me to his hometown to see some local history – an old shipping checkpoint from the Edo era, one of the only ones left in the country!

He told me that apparently this was built during the 1600s, and during that time there were various checkpoints (called Sekisho, 関所) set up along the Tokaido road, the main route to Edo. This was essentially an immigration checkpoint where you would have to be checked for weapons, etc. before continuing on to Edo. These days the only one left in the country is where I went, in Arai-cho, Kosai City (Shizuoka). The inside was super cool and definitely gave off those old Japan vibes. They had a lot of historical exhibits set up, but most of the info was in Japanese so I was lucky to have my friend there to help out with explaining. It was still really cool nevertheless, and the town itself was super cute too! I might post some pictures about it soon, even got to go to a real old-style Dagashiya the first time.
