The Tsukiji Market in Tokyo has a rich history dating back to the Edo period. The area was originally reclaimed from Tokyo Bay in 1657 after the Great Fire of Meireki, and it was named Tsukiji, meaning “constructed land”.

Originally located in the Nihonbashi district, it was moved to Tsukiji after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. Tsukiji Fish Market officially opened in 1935 and quickly became the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. It was popular for its early morning tuna auctions where massive tuna were sold to the highest bidders.

In 2018, the wholesale market relocated to the new Toyosu Market, but the outer market remains a popular destination for tourists and food lovers. Here, visitors can find a variety of shops and restaurants offering fresh seafood, produce, and traditional Japanese foods and kitchenware.
