Amazing Japanese Kite Festival! (in Japan!)

After visiting Hamamatsu in Shizuoka last year and learning about their annual kite festival we knew we had to go back to see it in person.

[Music] you need a whole weekend for this excitement this level of [Music] [Laughter] awesome wa wa wa that’s been the victory jams [Music] [Music] [Applause] what we needed was a string for you to reel me in yeah yeah or just fly up like a kite we are in hamam matu where they’re having a giant Kite Festival as you can see behind us there’s a bunch of kites in the sky and they are giant kites at the giant Kite Festival and we’ve been waiting a while to come here [Music] we came over to the actual field where everything goes down and it is intense the kites are flying everywhere there’s music nobody’s really fighting so much as of yet but fighting might happen in the future you’ll find out when we find out this all kind of started 460 years ago because the king or Lord of one of the Castles nearby flew a kite for his first son’s birth and that’s where this all started from this is a very child oriented Festival which is kind of surprising because the small children really can’t hold kites very well you ever seen a kid try to do a kite can’t do a kite but they bring the kids out here and I wonder if it’s because of that kind of familial tie that the backstory has that the father put out the kite for the firstborn son so the kids come here and get indoctrinated into the Kite Festival by their families cuz like real talk these kites are humongous if you just tied a baby to one of these kites it’d be gone like it’ be an Airborne baby you wouldn’t see no more yeah and they could be doing that for the babies wait you want them to do that for the B oh like a sky view from the baby yeah coming from Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania Virginia there is a lot of Civil War stuff and having grown up there never really got into it like the big Battlefield seemed quite boring and you see cannons and such but it doesn’t feel attainable I know that we’re not in any sort of like Warfare situation but something about this feels really civil Wares I know it’s not a cannon but it’s there like uh not weapon of choice but it’s their uh fuel I don’t really know what to say ammo ammo is what I was looking for it’s their ammunition what’s your mood about uh being festival and and doing the festival food thing it’s intense there’s so many people around everywhere you’re wanting to go it’s a lot ER says I’m going to hate this why why’ they do that wrong did you ask for it to be mixed with cider it just came like that yeah that’s bad lemonade the kite aspect of this is very unique but the festival and the food festival part of this is kind of like every other festival that you’ll see in Japan the same types of foods at the food stalls the same Vibes same kinds of sounds and stuff that you would normally hear of course the setting being all the kites in the sky makes it very cool but we have gone and gotten some of the standard Festival Fair got a Yaki soba and we got a Jan Pon which is more like a pancake kind of cheese somewhere in there it says tap cheese but I think he only has a little bit of cheese based on what he put in there but it’s kind of like a pancake he just makes on like a metal hot plate that then they close it and turn it over and it Cooks It Etc but there’s a little bit of cheese on the inside and this one’s yours this is mine how is it [Music] uh flavor why is it’s fine just which with cheesier yeah I mean it’s like eating a pancake uh like straight up it’s a little sweet the batter’s a little sweet you don’t need a syrup or anything which is kind of a good thing cuz that would make this even more it’s a b like a non soggy MCG griddle yeah yeah it’s fine uh unfortunately it’s not Jen it’s 500 yen so it’s little more expensive than advertised on the package um this lemonade seriously is just them putting cider and then squeezing lemons into cider that’s how they’re making this is that what they’re doing yeah seriously I didn’t notice it until after I bought it otherwise I probably wouldn’t have got it cuz it’s really not good it’s like poorly flavored you don’t like it and you like both of those things mhm yeah it’s kind of not okay it’s like a bubble gummy lemon flavor isn’t exactly what you’re looking for and then you’ve recently been talking about yakis SOA you said you wanted Festival Yaki SOA this isn’t living like a I I’ve seen one with an egg on top and maybe I dreamt it but [Music] uh it’s fine it’s fine it’s like a fried noodle dish it’s got mayonnaise on it standard Festival Fair I tell you what though there’s a chocolate banana in my future yeah I’m get that when we were here last time we went to the museum for the kites we learned that a lot of the kites are assigned to a neighborhood so each neighborhood has got its own symbol and it sounds like Katie may have discovered that you can have different colors of the same symbol but only you can have the same symbol yes so one neighborhood will have the ooh kagon character and nobody else is going to have that ooh so only that area is going to have that ooh and they can change the colors of it because they probably make more than one flag so that they can fight and if something gets damaged they can still come up the next day it might not necessarily always be the same color because I was seeing ones I see like in the booklet there’s a sue that’s blue but I’m staring at one that’s red in the sky I believe it’s the same neighborhood it’s just a different color but you can’t duplicate designs so it keeps things separated something I can’t also quite figure out is if the fighting is intentional or if it just happens can’t tell if there’s a competitive element or not here but there definitely are times where the cables are getting wound up and then they crash to the ground and I can’t imagine that it could be intentional it must be mistaken because if you wind up your cables with another kite and then the other one crashes yours will also crash right but this is definitely not a not dangerous event we’ve seen them come down really hard one guy got hit and I think this was like 15 minutes ago they might still be attending to him cuz it knocked him down everybody kind of freaked out and ran over to him like when it came down and C crash it hit him like a bullet and and another another kitee came down on the power lines and then several of them have gone into the trees and the distance because if they end up falling they’re coming from a very far distance so they make that Ark and they end up in the trees maybe in the road over there that’s why the road’s blocked off it’s not for ease of convenience for the fact that your car might get injured it’s weird because we have a very peaceful Vantage Point sitting up on this little Hill watching this whole thing go on but there’s sort of a violent chaos taking place down on that field that oddly enough you’re allowed to just walk through and nobody stops you yeah it’s for you chocolate banana is amazing strawberry [Music] wow seriously a lot of people sleep on that chocolate banana you shouldn’t sleep on that chocolate banana it’s good you sleep on the CH some people do like they’re like oh is this some basic no dude no no this thing is the best thing at the festival I don’t think it’s strawberry though I think it’s just chal if you’re like me and you’re a completionist and you’d like something to do more than just immersing yourself in the the kites you can get the brochure that shows all of the kites I am thus playing bingo you can see I’ve circled some of these items those are ones I found in the sky not all of the kites are going to be up in the sky today said that there would be 30 in this Sky seems like there are a lot more than 30 in the sky I haven’t marked down 30 so I can’t verify that but tomorrow is supposed to be even more crazy more kites in the sky so it could get way more dangerous than what we’ve seen today but it also means that I might complete my bingo you know I’m looking forward to one in particular it’s this Dragon he got a little bit of derp we’ve come to the end of day one here and they fired off some fireworks was a little startling as an American when you hear explosions like that you’re like in a big crowd but it was just a marker that the day is ending and the dudes need to start bringing their kites in but right before that happened got up and close and saw them working hard to keep one of the kites in [Music] [Music] air and these dudes all run in a circle kind of down the line and then back up and then grab it and come back down and pulling on this rope and again these things are really really big so it takes a lot of force to make any changes to the trajectory that those things are having with the breeze that we’re catching we also got to find a piece of rope which I think maybe we’ll keep this this this like of a cool like souvenir it’s just on the ground like it was trash and it looks like some of the rope that they use to tie to the Kites and it’s a pretty chunky thing but almost like straw kind of almost like tatami kind of that kind of grass or something um I don’t know I think it’s cool that’s a it’s a pretty cool souvenir it’s a cool I saw another person walking away with a little bit of rope and I was like I would like some rope and then you were like here’s some rope and I was like oh okay well that’s SS that instead of taking the shuttle bus back where we’ve decided to take a walk it’s about an hour and a half and I saw like a rope just dangling past my face and was like what the crap was that and then I noticed that there are ropes going across the sky over here from tree to tree we are a good 10 15 minute walk from the actual Park where they fly the kites but one of them landed in this area and they’re having to clean up the mess it’s stuck in a lot of trees and they’ve gotten this little bucket truck to come out here and get the Rope yo that’s the power company bucket [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] you would think that having kites in the Sky Fighting out in a field with just enormous sky and kites filling the sky would be enough hamamatsu don’t stop there you come into the city at night time and they bring the party they have already had a parade of brass bands go by that was kind of like the easy Jazzy start to the debauchery that I think is going to happen tonight right now they’re doing a float parade which is just kind of hyping everyone and this is the first of three days so I can only imagine what the next nights are going to be like when in hamatsu you get guza kind of their thing and last time we came we tried a little guza place that was highly rated and it was superb we’ve now come to a guoa place that didn’t have a line because we’re very hungry and we went to one place and had a mega line so I don’t know how high rated this one is but we’re going to give it a try one of the things that makes hamamatsu’s guza hamamatsu is how thin the skin is so guza is a dumpling with meat and vegetables inside of it and in this case it’s grilled and we’ve got ourselves a plate of 15 of them it comes out in a circular shape which is kind of uh distinct looking it just looks cool at this point I’m so hungry it could be anything and I’d be happy poop on your plate and see what happens no it’s good I mean it’s I don’t feel like it stands out like as like oh my God but it’s yeah it’s good it’s a good yoa and and it’s got like this skin on the side M I don’t know what I just ate but it was great it tastes like licking the grill but like in a good way it’s going to change a lot like while we make it it the thing is is GZA is kind of like pizza or sex where we turned like to Smurf for a second there didn’t we so G’s like pizza or sex fish this thought so even even if you’re even if you’re a bad Pizza you’re still having sex like you know what I mean like even bad yoza is still kind of an okay time have to be really bad have to be frozen or something like in edible like for it to be like really bad because I mean like once you put on the show you and the vinegar it’s just you’re just having a party it’s great yeah and I’d say that they they classified that as like edible good so I had a good time edible good is what wrote that I’m the pizza [Music] [Applause] baby the floats that are being used here are unique in the sense that they each have a different style to one another and they’re also a bit unique to that that specific style seems to be common within hamamatsu lots of other cities have got floats like this that they pull around during their festivals but the vibe itself of those floats tends to be different so it’s almost like there’s a specific style that gets built in each City so you’ll go and you’ll see these things in some places and we’ve seen them in places where they’re like really tall or they’re really big or there’s like different like unique aspects about them but these I don’t feel like have any explosively unique thing I think the unique thing about the festival here is really the kites these floats are cool though the same way that this is done in most places they’ve got this big long rope that’s hanging out the front of it and a bunch of people will pull them like Manpower and just pull them around it’s not like they’re like getting pulled by cars or something they get pulled by human beings and it’s like groups of people from communities and neighborhoods and stuff like okay we’ve got our float we’re going to drag it around and pound on drums and make a bunch of noise and every street you want to go across is blocked by a parade out of nowhere so I was like wanted to go back to our hotel to put some stuff away and get a coat and I was like I could see it and it took me like 45 minutes to get to it cuz I had to walk around so many of these parade things that were just like happening left and right just like figuring out how to get across the road was pretty I don’t know traumatic got a bit of a Groundhogs Day thing going on today because we woke up and basically did all the same things we did yesterday minus having to figure out how to get the bus tickets which was a little chaotic yesterday but we’ve got up we had our uh morning set we got on the bus we came here and you might ask why are you going to the same Festival again cuz it’s number one magical and number two there were a few things we didn’t get to do over here which was This Ti can which is like having an experience doing something you can actually hold the kite yourself so one of those giant kites is up in the sky right now we’re shooting for the Doon one and you can actually join everyone in trying to keep it in the air so we’re going to go get in line and I’m going to help Doon it’s like miming just there’s actually a rope oh that’s really hard to do it being the person doing the work and trying to do the chant at the same time weren’t working I think I was off from everything they were doing because I was just amazed that he was going up in the air like I was pulling and he was really going up it was very cool so could you feel like pull back like oh yeah it took all my strength like that hurts that really thin rope gave me like arthritic feelings because I was doing it so tightly the larger rope will make it so this doesn’t look right um so that your hands aren’t tensed so much but yeah that’s from Doon one of the things we didn’t get to do yesterday were these little tongs I saw tons of people with these little tongs walking around and the tent that’s behind me people just go up there they grab the tongs they get a plastic bag and I heard over the announcement that you will get a special Goods if you bring back your bag with trash in it that’s what I think will happen here I don’t care about what’s on the other end I actually like cleaning up as we’re going it just sounds like fun and it’s it’s really cool that they’ve just provided this they can reuse this over and over and over again and make other festivals cleaner and better and help people who need to clean up in the end so I’m all for it and I think here specifically it’s important because this festival butts right up to the ocean so if they have a bunch of trash even just for like a couple hours and it’s like blowing around all over the place it could easily end up in the sea so this Outsourcing the cleaning process to all the people who are coming in a way that’s kind of like easy to do is is a pretty good idea just to keep you know a turtle from getting like a thing wrapped around its neck or whatever happens or a golf ball stuck in a Blow hole or whatever when you’re out in the field out in the battlefield of the kites you don’t really think about all the obstacles that the kites might encounter but once they’re past the bounds of the park it’s just trees everywhere and we’ve been standing inside the trees with the dudes that will help the kites get out of the trees if they get stuck it’s kind of a surreal situation they’re just waiting for a tiny disaster and then they’ll all group together to get the kite out even if it’s not their neighborhood’s kite for sure no doubt there’s like super camaraderie here and they will get them out of the trees and back onto the field so they can go back [Music] up air Clin it’s a good morning did you know that yeah it’s pretty amazing wow this is insane it’s insaner than yesterday and lots of we’re here I don’t feel like we’re here earlier than we were yeah we’re in this area earlier so we’re seeing a lot of the kites taking off and them trying to take off together is insanity some of them smash back down to the ground some of them are really close to the trees While others are trying to set off and you’re just like is this really happening everybody’s okay with this they think this is safe enough to do with by standards everywhere I don’t know if they even think about it they just do it good sightings on the Bingo board today I found a Hostess cupcake and Derpy dragon has been spotted he is in the air where where where over there he’s derping no joke it is noteworthy that you can just walk up inside of the stuff and nobody says anything to you you can like walk over the lines that might be popping up in the sky you might be getting hit in the head by a kite falling there’s no don’t go here if you’re just a random dude which I am situation it’s just a free-for-all in Japan there’s always so many rules that just sticks out when you come to these festivals and they’re just like YOLO if you die you [Music] die so it can take multiple launch attempts for them to get it in the air and then actually get it up sometimes they go up it’s like 2 or 3 minutes and then it comes back down but to get it go way way up it seems like they’re trying multiple times before it’s a sure deal that they’re going to go up there I like sketched out cuz like we’re standing in the drop zone at one at one point a shadow came over both of us and we both kind of freaked like I don’t know what I’m supposed to do when that happens like what oh oh power lines people [Music] we’re definitely freaked out about the kites that are in the air and that they might come down at any point in time on top of people also you’ve got the Rope that’s holding the kite and that could be Troublesome just if it comes low enough something weird could happen but one thing we haven’t talked about is that every single kite has these little tendrils hanging off of it and I just watched one of them come down wrap around a girl’s neck I’m not even joking wrapped around her neck and it held on to her until she could get it off her neck and and she collapsed onto the ground everybody went and held like huddled around her I couldn’t see any markings and she wasn’t bleeding or anything but I’d imagine one that’s frightening as and two rope burn dude how old was she was like a child or younger than me but like adult like 18 19 and it kind of looked like it had ruined her day a bit for real like they just took her off it looks like she’s going to get help like medically about it okay that’s legit past the food stalls you’ll find the home of all of the kite Flyers each individual tent is a home to my left your right of the screen at stury dragons family they’ve got a huge kite on the other side that’s set upside down cuz they can’t set it the way the stick goes into the ground it won’t work so it has to be upside down each place they just have camaraderie they’re having some drink getting out of the Sun for the moment that they’re not pulling the the Rope on the kite and and just relaxing with their Community this is not something I’ve ever seen and I think that Japan has it quite well even in towns that don’t have a Kite Festival they still have matses that are specific to the community but this is an intensity for one of those that just is enviable it’s very very cool these little Community areas are actually kind of common at all festivals but what’s I think unique about this is because they’re doing an activity that’s all one big location you’re seeing their little Community tents all spread out in the same area as opposed to being like in a little somebody’s front of their house or something or at a business or something like that those usually where they’re at like spread out through the city this is just like a Big Blob of them all in one particular place update on the trash collection situation you would expect this to be an activity that maybe like old people and Katie get involved in where they’re like going around colle trash any Trash you’ve been busy doing Bingo and that would be probably true to a certain degree but there’s also just like these SC ball teenagers you know like the annoying teenagers that go to like events and they’re just like boisterous and kind of like everybody’s like would you just shut up well those kids are going around with bags collecting trash and they’re like fighting each other for the bigger pieces of trash like pushing each other I got that one I got one I got that one that’s the kind of vibe that’s going on where it’s like the annoying kids that you would expect to be like God and Mission even breaking things are just you know keeping the trash from going in the ocean what did you get it’s octopus has tentacles no she the hot no not really it just kind of tastes like fried stuff every time you come to a festival there’s something you’ve never seen before each year I feel like they’re out there like while it isn’t summer they’re creating like they had the go end coin thing and now they’ve had the cheese thing I think this is a bit of a flop it needs a dippable after eat review it’s actually pretty good once you get down to the bottom the bottom is where all the cheese lives and it’s pretty good I think it’s just a string cheese wrapped in a like a little bit of string cheese wrapped in a uh very thin tortilla like thing but it’s not a tortilla it’s like a the skin it could just be like a glass noodle but uh whatever uh spring rolls same thing that spring rolls are made in [Music] jeez I would say that like 85% of the people here are wearing hoppy which is the traditional thing that you would wear if you were involved in one of these communities and 20% of the people are not it’s a very heavy tilt towards people involved in the kite flying and in the community and everything versus just like looky L like us we are in the minority by a lot even if you consider some other Japanese people who are lose it might be from outside of town or whatever but it’s very much like the entire the the entire city of hamatsu is here and participating in this it feels like just with the number of people you see dressed for the occasion each one of the groups that has a kite flying up is usually from a neighborhood you’ll have the name of their neighborhood but it might also say the symbol that’s on the kite and then gomy which is like gang so this way is eggplant bang sounds really cool in English right and uh their flag has got nasu the kanji for eggplant on it but I saw a couple of them that said like um they wouldn’t even use a kanji it would be like the the the the the picture so there was one that was like a rose so it was like rose gang but it didn’t it wasn’t like a kanji it was like a like a drawing so it’s like B go masu go b b damn it that up you see my brain fry like H I said that wrong it’s Festival Food time guys and I made the rule that you just go up and you get the first things that you see you don’t go far looking for the variety because at the festival that is a bad idea you can do that on the Taco Bell menu but you can’t do that at the festival so I immediately walked in and I saw where the Tom Koshi is these uh corn on the cob I kind of knew that I that’s what I really wanted cuz I saw someone carrying one so when I saw that it was the first thing available I was like okay that’s good this is kind of like and they butter it and Grill it it’s kind of like yoza where even if it’s not that great it’s still good you know what I’m saying like it’s got that Vibe it’s not quite as explosive in flavor as the ones that we had up in Hokkaido is but that’s like their thing up there mhm um but it’s still good I mean it’s just corn buttered corn this is called Nei P it’s chicken breast that’s grilled instead of deep fried so there I felt okay that’s good um or at least in comparison yeah they have put ponzu on it which is kind of like a vinegar and showyou mix it’s really Tangy and kind of fun and then they’ve also put onions on top so that’s where you’re getting the Nei pone Nei is the uh onion and then pone is the pon Zoo then you get a topping on it which is a I chose a spicy daon situation good and I’m pretty happy about that yeah this is good we got to get more ponu in our life that stuff is amazing it’s in the fridge I know but we need to like make this this is good I’d like to have this with some rice at home people make this at festivals it’s Festival Food yeah but we could have it at home we have festivals at home we are not this talented oh Lori Loy load we also got a Sprite kind of excited about the Sprite I haven’t had spray in Long time yeah I saw it I was like he will want that you know why oh this is yours I don’t want your bitten off weird Sprite is Sprite is always refreshing my dude always refreshing did you know that no I didn’t know that until now so you got to throw away a bunch of trash and then they gave you some more trash to throw away oh it’s a little towel I don’t know how actually I could put it around my neck can not burn anymore I should have given this to me at the beginning so you might be asking why’d you take a shuttle bus like why is that happening the park where they do all of the kite flying is about 5 km away from the city central there are buses that come out here regularly we took one when we were visiting but to this amount of people and moving them they set up a whole shuttle bus structure which has turned out pretty good other than figuring out where to get the tickets it’s been pretty good coming back there’s a lot of people we’ve been in this line for 15 minutes and I’d say we probably got another 10 minutes to wait before we get on a bus and then 5 km down the road but we walked it yesterday and I’ve ended up with sunburn because of that and some stinky shirts and so today we are done with walking we’re going to take the bus [Music] we have been out and about you can probably tell by the sunburn that we have spent quite a lot of time on the kite field the tally is in 172 neighborhoods could be spotted during the weekend we’re only up to the second day of the festival but we will not be going for the kites tomorrow I don’t know what we’re doing tomorrow but we’re doing something tomorrow 172 neighborhoods I spotted 113 so that’s more than half of them and I was also doing a whole lot of other things this was still probably my primary goal you may have invited me here to be in a YouTube video but I came to Circle kit and I circled a lot of them I didn’t actually count the Bingos because bingos are kind of uneven in this document you’ve got a fory here but other Pages like they’re F Z’s so it gets harder to make that bingo I didn’t black out any page completely but I did get a 17 on one page where’s the 17 this is madness so close didn’t see this crazy guy actually I think I did I saw him block it out for me and I I think I saw Sue but I only saw it from the side so I couldn’t I couldn’t clarify it this one I definitely didn’t see so it’s just not possible day number three going to need to get better sunscreen you may it’ll tell that I had been drinking alcohol because of this not sunburn redness that may be coming through and we have come to a GZA restaurant and uh as one does we did yesterday it’s a different different place there’s like a zillion places in this town that sell yoza and uh this one was it was good it’s like GZA it’s like pizza it’s like a GZA or whatever and I also got a alcohol that I’ve never had actually before this is an um shoe which I have had before but they’ve got meon juice in it it’s almost like a meon syrup and then served on the rocks and the meon and the um shoe is divine this is my second one I don’t really think often of um shoe as a thing that you would add something to us like um shoe or you can get like different fruits that are like made in the same vein but they like made um shoe and then they put another thing inside which is sort of uncommon um yeah Katie got a uh meon highball it was not nearly as good as this this is this is wonderful so if you ever come to wherever this place is get this it’s good Saturday night is the highlight of the mons for sure because nobody’s got anything they got to work about tomorrow the floats that are out tonight have been almost doubled last night only 30 floats were out and about right now 56 are roaming the streets of hamamatsu that basically just means they are constantly going past each other I’m hoping at some point in my perview to be able to see eight or more from here to there can I see eight or more I don’t know you got to be like one of those lizards with eyes on the side of your head I might already be one it is nuts to butts up in here man yeah I let some people go by and was just like maybe your friends maybe your family you should stick together this is you homeboy why am I on waffle Duty you’re like I want the waffle all day I want the waffle a waffle do you want to get a waffle now is Waffle going to be F waffle and now you’re like okay you go ahead you really don’t want the first bite of the waffle it’s a dble it is a double chocolate dip waffle that is drizzled in chocolate and then topped with sprinkles and you’re giving me the first bite I cannot believe this woo yo it’s really good that chocolate is really good wow and she said be careful it’ll get on your clothes I thought she was telling everybody be careful it’ll make you fat and she kept saying like oh get and then she would point at her stomach but she was pointing at her clothes like they don’t want their business to ruin your thoughts about waffles nor their business in the future I’m going to write a bad review of this lady stand like got some waffle jizz on my clothes all right so I’m just going to recount to you the moment that I just had so I sat down on a bench over there just to relax for a moment we’ve been walking around for a little while honestly I just saw a chair and I was like oh you can sit there I’m going to sit there you left me and thus a dude came up who you could tell at first I couldn’t tell he had a problem but he came up very close to me and I was like and then I could tell something was wrong and he just kind of stood there and was like gave me a smile and he walked off on his own he walked a little ways away and I watched him put his hand in his butthole and I was like wow I’m going to avoid that so sat there for another 5 minutes some other foreigners came around and I thought to myself maybe I should ask ask them to just tune me into reality because maybe I’m out of reality I don’t know but I didn’t interconnect with those foreigners they went off on their way and I was still stuck in the reality that I was creating and so I got bored of sitting on the chair and I was like I maybe I’ll go find Eric so I got up and I turned around and there’s dude he’s standing right in front of me and he wants to shake hands and I told him no touch shakai I do not want to touch and he had to sit there and he was like just telling me this like no no and I was like no I’m not going to touch the hand that you put in your butthole cleanest hand in all of Japan I can tell you that right now second dirtiest waffle world what’s that like it wasn’t recording
