The Shimabara district in Kyoto, once the city’s only official red-light district, was established in the early Edo period and operated until the late Meiji period.
Today, remnants like the Sumiya and Wachigaiya buildings still stand and are designated Important Cultural Properties.
These sites offer insights into the architecture and lifestyles of the era. The district also hosts reenactments of the “Tayu” processions, where the highest-ranking courtesans would parade in elaborate attire.
Present-day Shimabara is a well-preserved tourist area where visitors can learn about its historical and cultural significance. The surrounding traditional Kyoto townhouses and charming streetscape allow one to experience Kyoto’s evolution from the Edo period to the present.
