We’re in Kobe and we’re about to ascend to the top of Mount Rokkō to see the amazing Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens. Don’t let the name fool you: there’s a lot more than just herbs in these gardens!

Part of the fun of visiting the gardens is the ride to the top via the Shin-Kobe Ropeway gondola lift from downtown Kobe.

See the entire ride—-up and down—- at the link above or below.

Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens are Japan’s largest herb gardens with around 75,000 herbs and flowers of about 200 varieties blooming throughout the year.

There are 12 extensive garden areas where visitors are welcomed by seasonal herbs and flowers arranged according to different themes.

The gardens were built in 1991 and also
feature greenhouses, restaurants and cafes, museums, exhibits and gift shops, not to mention incredible views.

The Welcome Garden and View Plaza are surrounded by a castle gate and a rest house designed in the motif of Wartburg Castle, a thousand-year-old castle in Germany.

The Rose Symphony Garden has approximately 60 types of fragrant roses. Featuring mainly English roses, the garden beckons visitors to enjoy roses of assorted colors and shapes that change according to each variety.

The Fragrant Garden is reminiscent of the European countryside.

The Herb Museum is like a living encyclopedia with around 100 varieties of herbs. This enables visitors to learn about the attributes of herbs and how they are utilized. There is a guided tour of the garden every day.

The kitchen garden features the mixed planting of vegetables and herbs.
The Glasshouse provides visitors with the pleasure of planting, observing and smelling the scents of mainly tropical plants such as spices and fruits.

Visitors will also be delighted by the sculpture entitled “Statue of Mother and Child” presented by the Italian city of Terni, the home of St. Valentine, as well as a colorful flower wall mural.
A lavender-picking event is held every June here in the Lavender Garden.

The Four Seasons Garden is specially designed with pretty herbs and flowers arranged according to season. Visitors can get a sense of each season by the roses and other flowers in full bloom covering the area.

The Waterfall Patio is designed in the image of Nunobiki Falls.
The Oriental Garden cultivates useful plants (plants for use in foods, medicine and craftworks) indigenous to Japan and Asia. The garden also provides observation and learning that includes the methods of using each plant.

Kaze no Oka Flower Garden features colorful seasonal flowers and herbs spread across the hill. The garden is situated in a perfect location that offers views of the Kobe landscape.

THE VERANDA is located 400 meters above sea level, providing amazing vistas.

The Fragrance Museum displays antique perfume bottles and equipment used to extract aroma. Guests can compare the 80 or so natural essential oils to find those that truly enchant the senses.

The beautiful Glasshouse features baskets hanging from the ceiling full of streptocarpus and fuchsia plants.

In the Herbal House, visitors can see reproduced scenes from daily life such as in the kitchen or living room.
The aroma of spices wafts through the air as you enter the Spice Factory. Here, visitors can learn about the history of spices, have a go with a spice crusher and experience the aromas as well as get a look at the spice aroma collection.
The Shin-Kōbe Ropeway and Nunobiki Herb Gardens were two of our most memorable highlights from our trip to Japan. Be sure to put them on your to-do list if you’re anywhere near Kobe.
