The village-museum is essentially a small-scale replica of a typical Portuguese village from the early to mid-20th century, featuring miniature houses, streets, and squares. These structures showcase various aspects of traditional Portuguese rural life, including crafts, agriculture, and daily activities. Visitors to José Franco’s Village can explore the intricate details of the miniature village, including a pottery workshop, a windmill, a blacksmith shop, a bakery, and many other elements that provide a glimpse into Portugal’s cultural heritage.

As I’m based in Lisbon, Portugal, most of my videos will be in this region, but there will be videos from all over Portugal in the future. Is there a special place in Lisbon you’d like to see, or elsewhere in Portugal? Let me know in the comment section below and I’ll see what I can do!
In this video… José Franco’s Village, Mafra, Portugal August 20, 2023 – 2:00 pm – 28 ºC / 82 ºF Hi everyone! Something completely different today, another one of those videos dedicated to peculiar places in Portugal… …that you’ve probably never heard of before! Today I’m visiting José Franco’s Traditional Village,
Also known as José Franco’s Museum Village, or simply José Franco’s Village. José Franco’s Village is a unique and charming open-air museum… that represents a traditional Portuguese village. This village is essentially a small-scale replica of a typical Portuguese village… …from the early to mid-20th century, featuring miniature houses, streets, and squares.
These structures showcase various aspects of traditional Portuguese rural life, including crafts, agriculture, and daily activities. Grocery store José Franco’s Village includes a pottery workshop, a windmill, a blacksmith shop, a bakery, a school, a chapel, and many other elements that provide a glimpse into Portugal’s cultural heritage. Blacksmith Carpenter
I’m not sure what this one is… Maybe a small kitchen? A chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. The history of this peculiar village starts with the birth of José Franco, in 1920. His father was a shoemaker and his mother a crockery seller. José Franco had 15 siblings! A traditional rural home
Since this region was an important pottery center, José Franco was involved with the pottery trade from an early age. After leaving elementary school, José learned the trade with two local master potters, before going into business for himself at the age of 17. This building is the actual museum of the village,
With exhibition rooms housing a repository of José’s extensive work. Ceramics store, where you can find pieces representing the most important pottery centers in Portugal. At the age of 17, José rehabilitated the pottery that had belonged to his grandfather, which had long since fallen into disuse. This is a fully functional windmill.
The idea for this small-scale village came about around 1945, when José Franco imagined building a living museum of his region and its traditions, next to the house where he lived and worked. This village also has farm animals, but I don’t know where they are today.
In 1954, at the age of 34, José Franco began building his Museum Village, fulfilling the dream of recreating his childhood memories. All kinds of old musical instruments. A miniature village! And this is a traditional primary/elementary school. Seamstress José Franco’s Village is mostly dedicated to the traditional activity of pottery,
But also showcases the rich artisan culture of the municipality of Mafra. Tinsmith José Franco’ Village is located in Sobreiro, a small village between Mafra… …and Ericeira, 40km (25 miles) northwest of Lisbon. Portugal – Spain José Franco’s Village – Mafra – Ericeira – Lisbon – Cascais
Today, the small world shaped by the hands of José Franco… …is visited by thousands of people every year. People used to bake bread every week for their own consumption, in ovens that where also used to heat the house. This is a real bakery, where you can taste the famous and delicious chorizo bread,
Among other local delicacies. In addition to his museum village, José Franco devoted himself mainly to religious art, especially nativity scenes. Works by him can even be found in the Vatican, and he received a papal blessing by Pope John Paul II. Don’t film me! I’m shy!
José Franco passed away in 2009, at the age of 89. If you’d like to support the channel visit: BuyMeACoffee.com/POVTours I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video! If you liked this video hit the LIKE button and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE More videos – Subscribe

Most awesome YouTube Miguel. This makes me happy & calms my mind. I just love your videos. Portugal has so many hidden gems
Ele representa o "modus vivendi" rural
Não o de hoje, mas o de há 100 anos
Cumprimentos
Tão lindo 😍😍 eu acho que a outra lojinha que o Miguel não tinha a certeza é um talho. 😊

Another beautiful, relaxing stroll in Portugal. Thank you. ❤❤❤❤ 🌹 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹. I was 10 years old when I arrived in Portugal and we went to live in Ericeira. We lived there for 2 years and I went to middle school in Mafra. I remember the name Sobreiro, but I can't remember where it was located. I never knew that this amazing little village existed. Pao com chorizo…(drool … 😋) ❤.
