Trying an onsen is a must do when you visit Japan… BUT… which one to choose from the MANY amazing places in the country? – was a difficult decision for us.
We ended up choosing Kinosaki Onsen. Why? Well, firstly… it’s a BEAUTIFUL town. Secondly, there’s seven bath houses to choose from (plus it’s tattoo friendly). Thirdly, there are many ryokans to choose from and within walking distance from the onsens. Fourthly, it’s just 2.5 hours away from Kyoto.
Things we recommend:
⭐ Book your ryokan in advance – ryokan stay are really popular, so it’s best to secure your favourite before it’s fully booked. We booked Onishiya Suishoen on Booking.com – please see the link below.
⭐ Reserve your train seats – this is actually a MUST as the train to Kinosaki Onsen from Kyoto is a limited express… as we had the JR rail pass, we were able to reserve our seats at the machine at Tokyo Station.
⭐ Use the map provided to choose an onsen – if you’re staying only for one night like we did, visiting all seven bath houses might be tricky especially if you’re walking on the traditional wooden sandals lol. Select the ones you want to visit and lastly… relax!
