See the smoke Rising that’s sakurajima it’s an active volcano minor eruptions sometimes take place multiple times in the day it was once an island but in 1914 a lava flow connected it to the mainland I’m in kagoshima the largest city in southern kushu besides sakurajima there are 11 other volcanoes in the

Area that’s the ocean kagoshima prefecture used to be known as the Satsuma domain this Coastal area in kushu has a long history about 150 years ago Sao takamori a samurai from Satsuma LED an uprising that ended the rule by the feudalistic Tokugawa Shogun this region was crucial in bringing about the modernization of

Japan so it seems and now it’s time to get my walking shoes on it’s now 8:00 a.m. look at all the people a lot of people here commute to school and work on the street car let’s check a map the city of kagoshima lies to the west of Sakura Jim

And Kingo Bay right now I’m here close to kagos shimao station there’s a major shopping district ahead called tenan I think I’ll check it out wow what a striking Monument the guide book says statues of the young satsa Samurai who studied in England during during the mid 1800s they’re dressed in western clothes

H they must have helped modernize Japan and up ahead is kagoshima chuo station the city’s largest terminal there’s a ferris wheel on top that’s Amazing and now I’m walking down the road from the station H there seems to be some action on this street a fishmonger a huge variety they must be in season five oh business is booming so these [Laughter] Areo good morning they seem to be selling well are they from kosim a local treat are they good raw wow oh the bones are out just like in a restaurant m sounds Delicious Shu you mean the Japanese liquor do you save some of the fish for yourself that makes sense thanks for talking with me I will thank you that K Nago sure looked fresh a great C IMA Delicacy I am coming to the ten monan kima’s biggest shopping area ah there’s an arcade entrance over there that must be It This looks like it goes on forever I seem to be a bit early most of the stores aren’t open Yet and there are people sweeping are they store workers good morning very mon you be opening soon I [Applause] see where’s the dirt from isn’t that volcanic ash in here Ash is always in the air so you’re always sweeping your morning routine oh dear so what kind of store is this a craft

Store 88 years that’s a long time is that new Kima ceramics how about the design huh I see and the colors are deep and somber so the clay here has Ash in it I see wow that is really something to treasure it was nice talking with you thanks you too

A mural made of Satsuma Weare that’s amazing sakurajima the ash might create cleaning problems but it also has its uses what a gorgeous blue sky feels great wow I can see sakurajima in the distance the ocean must be close ooh there’s a canal on my right what a nice walk Huh wow Dolphins two of them but why are they here ah there are some people h they’re reacting to his gestures oh they’re so [Applause] smart he’s training them hello there are you practicing for a show out here oh they’re from the aquarium for a minute I thought they

Sakurajima wow there’s a great view from Here and there it is the ridges are so clear against the blue of the sky Looking at this view is so relaxing hello they call me segodon I am a mascot based on the gentleman you see behind me he’s a true satsa hero Sao takamori called segodon was a samurai who played a key role in kagoshima history and all of Japan’s as well saigo loved the volcano sakurajima

But it hasn’t always brought good luck to the people here whenever the volcano erupted the city would burn soil filled with volcanic AAS isn’t good for Rice so satsa wasn’t a prosperous area the region found a different way to make money trade the Shogun nut had forbidden all trade with other countries

However because satma is located at Japan’s southernmost point it was possible to smuggle Marine Goods to China selling silk and shark skin brought prosperity to the city the 11th Lord of Satsuma shimadzu naraka used the prophets to subsidize Industrial Development he built a series of Western factories known as shusan they began making iron and glass Dutch blueprints were used to build a reverberator for melting iron in order to produce cannons shimasu strengthened the military in order to protect Japan from the growing Western Threat the region also produced handicrafts by integrating original ideas to Western glass making technology we were able to add red color and delicate patterns to our glass wear producing satuma kittyo we also refined the traditional Satsuma wear technology Satsuma developed painting methods that were exhibited at the Paris

Expo earning great acclaim for their work Satsuma evolved and developed contributing key figures to the modernization of Japan the Magi restoration okubo toshimichi and saigo takamori helped bring about the end of the era in which Samurai wielded political power forging a nation in which all citizens were

Equal they beat the odds and stuck to their principles come visit the home of these legendary Satsuma Samurai I’ll be waiting It’s now 11:00 a.m. let me look at the map h i chatted with the fishmonger near the station and then saw the mural at the tunan shopping arcade and then I saw the dolphins being trained and now I’m here shiryo would you look at this stone wall it seems to go on

Forever let me look at the guide book again this is where tumaru Castle once Stood saigo takamori a samurai established a military academy on its grounds 4 years later when the students became unhappy with the new Magi government CLE LED them them in a Revolt known as the satuma Rebellion he was defeated and died on the Battlefield they look like Tourists huh I wonder what’s up there he’s pointing up oh it’s a statue the satsa legendary hero saigo Takoni he seems to be a local guy an interesting outfit he has on perhaps specialist excuse me are you a guide a specialist on pyo oh that building a cafe near a statue so you’re a volunteer you seem to know a lot about pigo a fan oh so you’re related to his

Descendants almost part of the family around the statue up to his neck and he didn’t get angry he was known to be a kind man and you seem to really respect Him no no put your health first thanks for your time thank you what a nice guy not to mention very passionate he kind of reminds me of saigo [Applause] himself here I am in a residential area it’s very quiet oh a dad playing with his kid

What what is that what on Earth is happening and where over here hitting something Kendo Maybe now I [Applause] See the guide book says that this is G a traditional kagoshima sword style it’s known for its emphasis on the first strike Sao taka studied it Huh I’d like to take a closer look Excuse me yes whoa yes he rushes forward and then strikes excuse me these kids seem to be very focused so much energy sever the Earth taxes I See to overpower your enemy win or lose Do or Die well no wonder they’re so focused even the younger ones wow they’re Amazing great work kid I’m sure you’ll land that first fatal blow probably did you eat a good breakfast this Morning like a large bowl of rice soup soup huh Sensei you think you’re coaching a future pigo what a great [Applause] smile thanks for your help goodbye jendu is based on power but the students and teachers seem to share a deep bond H perhaps that’s the true Spirit of the Satsuma Samurai hello I’m Sao takamori of the Satsuma tourism Brigade I am okimi I am princess today we’re going to introduce you to some of kagos shima’s tasty Regional Cuisine first I’m going to show you this in third place is akum maki a preserved food that Satsuma Samurai carried with them during

Battle first soak Mochi rice in Aku overnight Aku is made by mixing Ash with water and skimming the Surface then wrap the rice in bamboo and cook it in the thinned auu for 6 hours the result is a lovely treat almost like jelly and it’s a preserved food so it doesn’t spoil easily I recommend eating it with roasted soy flour and molasses yum now let’s try this

Restaurant and now I I would like to show you my personal favorite in second place is tonkotsu Begin by slowly cooking kagoshima pork for 5 hours add some kagoshima brown sugar then add an entire bottle of Shu and cook again to complete the dish let’s dig in oo the meat is so

Tender and finally a dish that every kagoshima grown-up loves the number one spot goes to sakushi it’s been eaten at local celebrations for centuries first add Momi and Ash to sake then soak rice in it over time this preserves the rice The marinated rice is topped with lots of fresh seafood caught in the Area then the sake mixture is poured over the dish and left for 5 hours fans of the dish often add another splash of the sake before Eating the sake gives the dish a unique sweetness the flavor is simply captivating that was delicious kagos shima’s traditional food is so good please come and try [Applause] It it’s now 2: p.m. oh there’s a street [Applause] car okay let me check the map I passed saigo’s statue saw the jigu practice and then went a bit further south and I am Here a residential area and what’s down here h a narrow alley and houses on both sides o what’s above the door lion ornaments huh the atmosphere in this neighborhood is very unique the guide book says that this is Sano where the Yami island people have a community they came to kagoshima for

Year a major eruption in 1914 saw plumes of Smoke Rise 10,000 m in the air the lava flowed down to the Village at the foot of the volcano forcing the residents to Flee there’s a place that reveals the intensity of the eruption this Shrine gate even though it’s 3 m in height you can see that it was almost completely buried in volcanic ash from the eruption it has been preserved as a remembrance of the horrors of the eruption and is now a popular tourist

Spot and here is another great place a field at the foot of the volcano so what do you think is growing here Sakura Jima dong huge huh the soil has lots of Ash which means it drains well that’s great for root vegetables one daon grown here weighed more than 30

Kilos it’s in the Guinness Book of World Records here’s a slice of pickled daon look how big it is my final favorite spot is Sakura gima’s Beach if you dig a hole for a few minutes hot water courtesy of the active volcano it’s a natural foot bath it feels
