<Overview and Highlights>
Namahage is a traditional folklore practice in the Oga Peninsula of Akita Prefecture. Dressed as oni (demons) and wearing terrifying masks, the Namahage visit local homes every New Year, admonishing lazy or misbehaved children. This unique custom strengthens community bonds and encourages good behavior in children. The Namahage can primarily be seen at the Namahage Museum in Oga City and during the winter Namahage Sedo Festival, where visitors can experience face-to-face encounters with them. Oga City also hosts museums dedicated to Namahage and facilities where visitors can enjoy local culinary culture and specialties.
